Cultures in Conflict
Lethal conflict between different cultures and governments seems to be a constant part of human history. People from military professionals to children playing "Quake" find the idea of warfare stimulating and exciting - as a test of their greatest wits and resourcefulness toward the goal of saving their lives, pride, home, way of life, country and even their god's good will.
Yet most or all wars, when viewed objectively, are massively tragic wastes of humanity.
In any conflict, our own culture and government (democratic or totalitarian) and communication media will make a decision about a conflict - that one side is good and the other side is bad, and that the bad side must be stopped at all costs. These institutions, either willfully or unknowingly, will stop communicating with the "bad" side, and then will demonize them. Descenting views will be suppressed in the name of "supporting our boys" who are risking their lives in conflict to help us.
Yet, in the modern world, it is even more dangerous to accept war as a fact of life. Many say that modern nuclear arsenals are sufficiently powerful to destroy all humanity on an entire hemisphere, through a "nuclear winter"
Now things are different. Now we have the internet, and we can reach
across the globe. Never before could we actually communicate freely
with the "bad side", to ask them what they are doing and why.
Maybe it will not change the outcome, but at least we can begin to talk,
to ask questions and to learn.
